ב-1847 מינתה המלכה ויקטוריה את הרופא, הסוחר ואיש העולם הגדול אסאד יעקב חייט לקונסול הבריטי הראשון ביפו. בשני העשורים שבהם שימש בתפקיד חייט שם לו למטרה לגשר על הפער בין מזרח ומערב ולקדם סימביוזה תרבותית וקשרי מסחר וחקלאות חשובים.
בבית הקונסול שהתנשא על גבעה ברחוב הצורפים נערכו תדיר אירועים דיפלומטיים רשמיים, נשפים ומשתים לאצילי התקופה.
מראש הגג נפרש נוף מלוא האופק, מכל כיוון שאליו מביטים. התצפית הנדיבה מקיפה את קו הרקיע האורבני של תל אביב, נמתחת דרך חוף הים ומשקיפה מגבוה על גן הפסגה ועל סמטאות יפו. העיצוב, עליו הופקד דן טרוים, רוחש כבוד לאדריכלות המקורית תוך שימור רוח המקום, על מבני הקשתות וחיפויי האבנים שבו, ומוסיף לה משב עכשווי שממזג עבר מפואר עם הווה מבטיח. ההכנות בעיצומן, המפות עולות על השולחן, כלי הכסף עוברים צחצוח אחרון, גביעי השמפניה יוצאים מהארון. תכף מתחילים.
In 1847, Queen Victoria appointed physician, merchant, and great man of the world Assad Yaakov Chayat as the first British consul in Jaffa. For the next two decades, Chayat endeavored to bridge East and West, promoting cultural understanding as well as significant commercial and agricultural ties. The Consul’s House, towering over HaTsorfim Street from its elevated position, became the frequent site of official diplomatic events, feasts, and banquets for the local nobility.
From the rooftop, you can admire magnificent panoramic views that stretch to the horizon in every direction. The especially large observation deck looks out toward Tel Aviv’s urban skyline and the Mediterranean seashore, while gazing at Jaffa’s charming alleys and HaPisga Garden from above. The modern design by Dan Troim preserves the historic spirit of the Consul’s House by respecting the time-honored architecture, including the original arched structures and stone cladding, while adding a contemporary twist that seamlessly merges a glorious past with a promising future.
